Calasetta, Carloforte - Sulcis

The Province of Carbonia-Iglesias covers 1495 square kilometres (6.2% of the Sardinian territory) and has 23 communes, including two islands: the Island of San Pietro and the Island of Sant'Antioco (this one is connected to the territory by an artificial isthmus and is the fourth for extension in Italy), both form the Archipelago of Sulcis. The province has a hinterland with great landscape interest and areas left completely untouched: indeed, here we find the Sulcis Natural Park. Incredible landscapes, breathtaking sea, ancient culture, A mining heritage protected by Unesco and small villages to discover.
Calasetta is a small town located on the island of Sant'Antioco, off the Southwestern coast of Sardinia. The Island of Sant' Antioco is situated off the south western corner of Sardinia between Capo Teulada in the south, and the beautiful Costa Verde to the north. Approximately one hour's drive from Sardinia's capital, Cagliari, Calasetta is connected to mainland Sardinia by a causeway, allowing fast access to the airport for those arriving or leaving by air.
Calasetta is an excellent jumping-off point for sailing north to Alghero or Corsica, west to the Balearics or south to Cagliari, Tunisia or Sicily. There are also rich local cruising grounds to be found around the Islands of Sant'Antioco and San Pietro as well as many beautiful bays where visitors can relax on clean, white sand and swim in crystal clear, turqoise water.
The Calasetta territory has numerous beaches of suggestive beauty. The coast of Calasetta is steep and rocky to the west and low and sandy to the north-east. The coastline has been catted in three places which correspond with three marvellous beaches: "Spiaggiagrande" or "Porto Maggiore", the "Salina" and "Sottotorre”.
Calasetta is very famous for its characteristic urban tower which appears so often in images of the village. It was built before the little town was founded, around 1737, erected by the Savoy authorities to defend the channel between Sant'Antioco and the Island of San Pietro. The tower was used to keep watch for Saracen vessels.
Calasetta clearly lays claim to its Tabarkan origins and the language of Tabarka is spoken fluently even today. Among it many traditions there are plenty of feasts which have great charm. One of these is certainly the Feast of San Giovanni Battista, which alternates pagan rites with holy ones and involves the whole population in dancing and singing late into the night illuminated by a huge bonfire.
The typical cuisine of Calasetta is no less important. Every dish combines a mixture of culinary types, where the dishes originating from Liguria bump into and meet with contributions from North-Africa, Sicily and even Sardinia: the typical dishes of Calasetta offer recipes characterised by a glorious dish of tuna fish alongside the "farinate di ceci” (a sort of savoury flan made with chick peas) and fish soup. Visiting Calasetta a stop must be made at the "Ermanno Leinardi" Museum of Contemporary Art which houses a vast collection of works by contemporary artists.
Carloforte is a beautiful Sardinia corner that remembers Liguria with an astonishing naturalistic environment. Carloforte, the only Municipality on the island of San Pietro, has lots of historical and natural features that make it unique and charming. In 2004 it gained the honorary title of municipality of Genoa, thanks to the strong economic and cultural bonds with the city of Genoa. Due to its diverse and rich environment Carloforte has been included in the list of Italian most beautiful villages. The town derives from an accurate design in which could be found elements of Eightieth Century Architecture. The architectural value of the village is testified by the numerous building with wonderful facades that add glamour to the small town. But the secret of success of the island is undoubtedly the incredible colourful sea, every year destination of many tourists. At the end of may don't miss Girotonno, international gastronomic festival focused on tuna.
